Maintenance Skilled Worker/ 5th Class Engineer - Terrace

Job description and duties

Coast Mountain College (CMTN), Terrace Campus, invites applications for a continuing full-time Maintenance Skilled Worker / 5th Class Engineer. This position will commence as soon as possible. A flexible schedule is required as some evening and weekend work may be necessary, as well as some travel. Salary will be in accordance with the BCGEU Support Staff Scale, Level 14.

Duties:  The Maintenance Skilled Worker / 5th Class Engineer will perform maintenance and repairs related to buildings, grounds, and equipment in the following areas: electrical, plumbing, carpentry, HVAC, painting, groundskeeping, snow removal, and power engineering.

Duties will include:

  • Ensure building and equipment meet all safety, security and fire regulations and policies.
  • Makes recommendations for major repairs and purchases to Facilities Foreperson.
  • Ensure compliancy with the 'Boiler and Pressure Vessels act' and keeps all logs and inspection reports up to date for Technical Safety BC inspections.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose and repair building systems and major equipment such as Boilers, HVAC equipment, plumbing, electrical, grounds, and ancillary heating and hot water equipment.
  • Respond to emergency situations such as floods or power outages.
  • Operate truck and trailer, load and move furniture and equipment around campus or to other locations.
  • Use DDC system to troubleshoot and adjust heating systems.
  • Snow removal at the Hazelton campus and regular grounds maintenance in Smithers, Hazelton, and Houston.
  • Monthly reconciliation of department Corporate Visa card.
  • Other related duties (of similar scope and complexity) as assigned.

Qualifications

Completion of Grade 12 with a 5th Class Power Engineer Certificate and 5 years’ experience in a construction/Trades environment. A class 5 driver’s license is required. Relevant Trades certifications are an asset.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Familiar with operation of building and maintenance equipment and tools.
  • Relevant Trades certifications is an asset
  • Good oral and written communication, and technical skills
  • Ability to work under pressure whilst meeting deadlines and with frequent interruptions
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to determine priorities, be self-directed and work with minimal supervision
