Director- President's Office- Terrace, Prince Rupert or Hazelton

Job description and duties

Coast Mountain College (CMTN), Terrace campus, invites applications for a full-time, continuing role of Director (excluded from union affiliation) to the President’s Office commencing as soon as possible. The salary for this role is $155,922 and is accompanied by a benefits package.

Duties: The Director, President’s Office is responsible for institutional and Board-level policy, governance, implementing initiatives, and supporting key initiatives of the President’s Office. There are three main categories of responsibility to this role.

Governance

The Director is the key support person for the College’s Board of Governors and provides governance guidance, logistics, and record-keeping. The Board of Governors and its committees rely on the Director for guidance in following Robert’s Rules as well as best practices in Board engagement and training. The Director is responsible for the full-cycle of Board membership: elections and Order-in-Council appointments, to orientation and onboarding, to ongoing training. The Director is also responsible for the full-cycle of Board meetings: ensuring meetings are scheduled, including committee meetings; providing support to the Board Chair and the Committee Chairs, drafting agendas for input; circulating meeting packages, recording accurate minutes, and managing the Board budget. This aspect of the role is that of the Board Secretary and trainer.

Policies and Procedures

The Director is the key driver of the policies and procedures of the College that are administrative and organizational. The Director ensures that the policies and procedures are thorough, reflect changes to Legislation and new government directives, and follow a regular review cycle with appropriate engagement and consultation. The Director works with subject-matter experts to craft new policy and procedure documents, as well as guidelines and terms of reference documents. The Director ensures college policies are up-to-date and that there is a regular cycle of review.

Key Initiatives

The Director chairs cross-unit committees on the President’s direction and helps the President implement key initiatives. They also support the work of the leadership team through drafting confidential reports, crafting recommendations, and engaging in cross-sectoral analysis. As a member of the President’s Office, the Director is involved in the political aspects of the institution, at the local and provincial levels. The Director is also a member of the working group to address FOIPPA requests.

Occasional work on weekends and in the evening is required. This position requires some regional, inter-campus, and provincial travel. This position is on-campus, and the expectation are the Director is working from their campus office, Monday through Friday. The successful candidate can select their campus preference: Hazelton, Terrace, or Prince Rupert.

Qualifications

  • A completed bachelor’s degree in a relevant area of study, e.g., public policy, political science, public administration. A law degree and/or master’s degree is strongly preferred
  • Two or more years in a formalized governance setting, e.g. serving on a government-appointed Board of Directors. Fluency with Robert’s Rules or the Carver Model of governance is required
  • Four or more years of experience working with confidential information and with discretion
  • Four or more years of experience interpreting and applying rules, regulations, policies, and legislation in the workplace
  • Two or more years of experience working in an environment that is public sector and/or a government-regulated industry
  • Two or more years of experience in facilitating training and consultation groups

     

     Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Very strong writing and research skills, as they pertain to policies, legislation, government correspondence, and drafting documents. Ability to write well without the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and generative artificial intelligence (GenAI)
  • Experience interpreting and applying new legislation to the college context
  • Experience analyzing complex and ambiguous situations, applying policy and legislation, and developing documents based on analysis
  • Meticulous attention to detail in drafting agendas, monitoring meeting schedules, and taking minutes
  • Experience creating, storing and sharing documents efficiently, using the Microsoft Office suite and shared storage systems, such as SharePoint
  • Proficient at adapting to emerging technologies
  • Strong time management skills and a high level of organization. A ‘can do’ attitude that is action-oriented
  • A strong communicator: someone who easily connects with people, listens deeply, synthesizes information quickly, and distills messages accurately. Naturally creates and fosters relationships across diverse populations
  • Able to function effectively across cultures, particularly with Indigenous communities, as demonstrated through past professional experience
  • Sensitive to political environments and the importance of good relations in the communities the college is connected to, as demonstrated by previous experience working in a politically sensitive environment
  • A valid Class 5 driver’s license is required for driving college vehicles
