Payroll Specialist (Terrace)

Coast Mountain College (CMTN), Terrace campus, invites applications for a full-time continuing Payroll Specialist. Salary will be in accordance with the BCGEU Support Staff Salary Scale, Level 12: $2,646.00 biweekly plus a comprehensive benefits package.

Duties:  This position provides confidential, quality-controlled bi-weekly payroll processing services ensuring all employees of various classification groups, levels and tenures are paid accurately and on time, and that all deductions are calculated, deducted, and remitted

Duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Administers payroll in accordance with collective agreements, employment standards legislation and employee contracts, enters employee data and generates pay calculations
  • Calculates a variety of complex payroll deductions including income tax, pension and benefit premiums, charitable donations, and garnishees, ensuring compliance with all federal, provincial, and local payroll tax regulations
  • Responsible for preparing and maintaining payroll documents and reports including pension, WorkSafe BC reports, records of employment, T4s, Service Canada summaries, and seniority
  • Provides advice and guidance to employees regarding payroll payments and policy issues
  • Creates and updates new employee records information in to the HR Information Management system and is responsible for ensuring meticulously accurate information regarding salary and benefit eligibility
  • Performs pay salary increment adjustments
  • Administers seniority for non-regular BCGEU employees
  • Monitors and ensures accuracy of timesheets and ensures alignment with maximum hours for the appointment, investigating and resolving discrepancies

Qualifications

A minimum of a two-year diploma (Bachelor’s degree preferred) in Accounting/Business along with three years of payroll-related experience in a large complex and integrated payroll system (i.e.: Colleague, Banner, Ceridian, etc.).  Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP), or equivalent, from the National Payroll Institute is preferred. 

Required skills and abilities include:

  • Experience interpreting and working with collective agreements and/or other regulations and legislation related to compensation or human resources
  • Experience establishing, and maintaining effective working relationships
  • Knowledge of full cycle payroll compliance concepts and processes
  • Demonstrated proficiency using standard office technology
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, be self-directed, and work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to communicate complex information to diverse audiences using effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Possess a high level of integrity and discretion in handling confidential information
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with meticulous attention to detail
  • Possess tact and effective interpersonal skills
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, with a proactive approach to resolving challenges and concerns
  • Proven multi-tasking skills with the ability to thrive in a diverse, fast-paced environment
