Parked just outside the Hazelton campus sits Coast Mountain College’s glacier coloured mobile trades training unit. It represents learning in close to home and brings education to the doorstep of students who wouldn’t otherwise be able to access trades training in their own community.
It’s a 1,000 square foot mobile classroom that can be configured to teach a myriad trades programs and it brings experiential learning to life.
In Hazelton, it’s configured to bring Carpentry Level 2 to the community. The same theory, same hands-on experiences are taught in the mobile classroom as is taught in the trades shops at Coast Mountain College’s brick and mortar campuses across the region.
Inside, students are getting their hands on state-of-the-art equipment in a classroom that has been fully stocked with the tools and supplies needed for the carpentry program. It means students can avoid having to move away from their communities to access training that leads to jobs.
“I think it’s great, especially for small communities like this, to be able to get the chance to get the same education as other people without having to travel so far,” says student, Robert Green. “Anybody who would like to get a higher level of education in the trades industry, I would definitely recommend it.”
