Northern British Columbia — Working to address staffing shortages in healthcare across the North, five agencies have collaborated to pilot a joint campaign to encourage enrolment in vital educational programs that include Nursing, Practical Nursing, Health Care Assistant, Medical Laboratory Technology, Health Sciences and Social Work.
“This was an important collaboration between Northern Health and Coast Mountain College, College of New Caledonia, Northern Lights College and University of Northern British Columbia,” says CMTN president Dr. Laurie Waye. “We all share the goal of building our healthcare resources here in the North, and the most important aspect of that is having more people training and working in the region they love to call home.”
Printed cards were delivered via Canada Post to all addresses across the region from Quesnel and Fort St. John to Haida Gwaii and Kitimat. The cards have also been placed in public buildings such as libraries and recreation centres, and shared on social media.
The programs featured on the postcard and social media posts highlight areas where Northern Health is looking to fill vacancies to better serve communities in the North.
The campaign draws the link for community members between studying at a local institution and finding a rewarding job that offers future career growth, competitive salaries, excellent benefits and the opportunity to make a big difference to the quality of life in Northern BC.
Enrolment for most of the featured programs is still open for September 2025 and the collaborative is hoping to see an uptick in applications in the coming weeks. Additional collaborations are planned which are a cost-effective way to encourage more awareness of the opportunities in the healthcare sector for everyone.
