Dockside Fishery Observer & Field Technician 

Company:  J.O. Thomas and Associates Ltd. is a Vancouver based consulting firm providing professional and technical fisheries-related services. 

Location: Prince Rupert and/or Masset

Salary: $20-21 per hr.

Position Overview:

Designated Dockside Fishery Observers and Field Technicians are required for the 2025 commercial salmon season to collect biological samples and to monitor and verify catch landings at designated landing ports. Dockside observers and field technicians provide accurate, timely, and independent third- party verification of commercial salmon catch landings, along with accurate and timely collection of biological data. 

Key Responsibilities:

  •  Identify all Pacific Salmon species 

  • Collect biological samples for landed fish 

  • Monitor the landing of fish and verify catch landings 

  • Report catch results 

  • Report occurrences 


    Requirements:

    • You must have a cellphone 

    • You may be required to work out of town 

    • You may require your own transportation to get to and from docks and fish plants 

    • Be physically fit and able to meet the physical requirements of the job including but not limited to 
climbing ladders and boarding fishing vessels. 

    • Legally eligible to work in Canada. 

    • Evidence of a Criminal Record Check is required 

    • Successfully complete a DFO-approved Dockside Observer training program with a pass mark of 
75% in each module. 

    • Have no significant financial interest in a commercial fishing business that harvests, processes, or 
sells commercial fishery products.

    Education: 
High school graduation or equivalent knowledge base. 
A degree, diploma, or technical training in areas of natural resource management, biology, zoology, environmental science, aquaculture, conservation management, etc. is preferred, but not limiting.

    Summer Reading Club Coordinator

    Position Overview:

    The Prince Rupert Library is in need of a Summer Reading Club Coordinator. The student must have a good command of the English Language and must enjoy working with children, the general public, books, and libraries. This is an ideal position for a student who is interested in a career in the field of libraries or field of education.

    Key Responsibilities:

    • developing activity plans for children in grades 1-6
    • selecting books and library materials of interest for children attending the program
    • searching the internet for support materials for weekly programs
    • encouraging children who may be struggling with reading, or to whom English is a second language.

        Do you enjoy meal planning, being creative in the galley and preparing meals for large groups of people? We're looking for someone with a passion for bringing people together over food to prepare delicious and well-rounded meals for our trainees, volunteers, and crew aboard our 4, 5, and 10 day trips! We are now accepting applications for the paid crew position of Cook, with the role starting mid-summer 2025 (some flexibility around start date)!                                                  

        SALTS is an independent Christian-based registered charity located in Victoria, BC. We seek to create an environment that is caring and respectful, where young people from all walks of life are encouraged, inspired, and heard. If you are passionate about supporting our mission and values, we want to hear from you!  All crew members guide and mentor the young people who sail with us, and the Cook role has an additional focus on preparing three meals and an evening snack each day for everyone on board. SALTS operates two schooners based out of Victoria BC, and each year 1700 young people participate in our program as trainees, on trips which are between 4 and 10 days long in coastal BC waters. Annual crew salaries range from $40K-$94K. Employment for all roles is typically full-time, year-round, but we also have need for some part-time crew positions if that is preferred. 

        Cook: Cook for 30-40 people four times daily (breakfast, lunch, dinner, evening snack) with the help of any available trainees, provide youth mentorship and Christian spiritual care, and assist in sail training and all program activities as time allows.
