Smithers, BC – On Thursday, September 26th, students on the Smithers Campus of Coast Mountain College (CMTN) met with local employers and learned more about potential jobs in the area. This was the first year CMTN hosted a career fair on the Smithers campus. The planning team sent out invitations to businesses and organizations in the Smithers area and received a well-balanced selection of registrations from potential employers in various industries.
Employers set up their booths in the Gathering Space just before noon and had a few moments to enjoy a complimentary lunch before the fair opened to the students. Employers attending the fair included:
All West Glass
Bulkley Valley Credit Union
West Metric Civil Contracting
Northern Health
Northwest Child Development Centre
Seabridge Gold
Service Canada
Smithers Community Services
Smithers Fire Rescue Services.
In addition to local employers, Danna Buick and Dr. Jenny Mao with the CMTN Work Integrated Learning department were available to talk with students about the services and supports CMTN offers.
In all, more than 40 students attended the fair. The students who took part left with a better understanding of local employment options and made valuable connections with prospective employers. Employers also appreciated the event, with several sharing great suggestions for event improvements and saying that they looked forward to participating in future career fairs.
The Career Fair Organizing Committee would like to thank all the local employers and CMTN Smithers students for helping to make the first career fair a great success. They are excited to build on this success for future career fairs.
