Lab Technician (Continuing Part-time)

Job description and duties

Coast Mountain College (CMTN), Prince Rupert campus, invites applications for a continuing part-time (17.5 hours per week) Lab Technician commencing as soon as possible. A flexible schedule is required as some evening and weekend work will be necessary, as well as travel. Salary will be in accordance with the BCGEU Support Staff Scale, Level 9: $2,361.10 biweekly plus a comprehensive benefits plan.

Responsibilities: The Lab Technician is responsible for supporting the successful delivery of applied learning in the UC/CCP/ACE programs. This position will assist faculty in the preparation and set-up of labs, experiential and field learning including overnight trips and other relevant applications.

  • Assist in advance and during labs including responding to student’s questions, explaining the use of equipment, identification of samples, methods, etc.
  • Calibrate, maintain and perform minor repairs to lab equipment. Arrange professional repairs of equipment as needed. Conduct annual inventory and order supplies.
  • Maintain laboratories, including plant and rock collections, demos and displays, in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Respond to and assemble instructor requests for teaching equipment needed for course delivery.
  • Provide clerical support functions in program management
  • Provide transportation for students and staff to field locations, ensure all gear is organized and ready for field trips, and attend overnight camping in support of students and quality learning
  • Organize, maintain -and operate where possible - CMTN UC/CCP/ACE vehicles & boats

Qualifications

Qualifications: Two years of post-secondary or a two-year Certificate, Diploma or Associate’s Degree in Science, Natural Resources, Ecology, Environmental Studies, Medical Science/Vet Tech, Education, or a related field. WHIMIS and TDG certifications, Level 1 First Aid, Transportation Endorsement, marine radio, boat certifications, and Class 4 Driver’s License are considered assets. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities include:

  • A valid Class 5 Driver’s License; Class 4 is preferred
  • Proficient computer skills (MS Office, Internet, email, Calendar, and Teams)
  • Ability to work as part of a dynamic team and with minimal supervision
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to establish good working relationships with clients, faculty and students
  • Demonstrates conscientious, consistent and thorough work with attention detail
  • Demonstrated knowledge and concern of health and safety standards, hazard identification and risk mitigation
  • Ability to function effectively across cultures, particularly with the Indigenous communities
