Terrace, BC — Many Coast Mountain College (CMTN) students will be finishing their programs in a few weeks and preparing to enter the workforce. Tracy Woodburn, Associate Dean of Learning and Teaching, saw the opportunity to support community businesses by connecting them with well-qualified local job seekers while at the same time providing an opportunity for students to learn important skills such as networking and self-promotion.

“Transferable skills, like speaking professionally and connecting with prospective employers, are important for success in any field. Many instructors at the College see the value in providing this opportunity for future graduates, in a supportive environment,” says Woodburn. “At the same time, CMTN can support local businesses by helping them fill vacancies.”

CMTN Human Resources Manager Stefanie Pellegrino adds, “New graduates bring unique value to their employers. They’ve studied the latest academic research in a field and can offer fresh perspectives and ideas. We have hired many of our own graduates, with great success, and want other businesses to have the same experience.”

The career fair took place at the CMTN Terrace campus on Thursday, March 16 from noon to 3 p.m. Nineteen businesses representing many different industries attended. Pending positive feedback from the students and community, CMTN plans to replicate this model in the future, both in Terrace and at the Smithers, Prince Rupert, and Hazelton campuses.
