Freda Diesing School Co-Founder Stan Bevan Appointed to the Order of British Columbia

Apr 02, 2026

Terrace, BC – Coast Mountain College (CMTN) is proud to celebrate Stan Bevan (Satsan), master carver and co-founder of the Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art, on his appointment to the Order of British Columbia (OBC) in November 2025.

The honour was formally presented at a ceremony held at Government House in Victoria, led by Lieutenant Governor Wendy Cocchia. Stan Bevan was one of 15 individuals recognized for their outstanding contributions to the province and beyond.

A renowned Tahltan/Tlingit artist, Bevan has dedicated his life to advancing Indigenous art, cultural revitalization, and education. As a co-founder of the Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art at CMTN, he has played a pivotal role in mentoring emerging artists and preserving traditional knowledge.

Earlier this year, Bevan was also honoured within the CMTN community. In February, family members, Elders, instructors, students, and fellow co-founders of the Freda Diesing School, gathered at Waap Galts’ap, the longhouse on the Terrace Campus, for a surprise luncheon celebrating Bevan's achievements and contributions. The event reflected the respect and appreciation for Bevan and his influence on the community and culture.

CMTN congratulates Stan Bevan on this well-deserved honour. Although Bevan has retired from regular teaching, his legacy in shaping the next generation of Northwest Coast artists echoes through the work of each student learning in the Freda Diesing School of Northwest Coast Art.
