Terrace, BC – The Electrical Department at Coast Mountain College (CMTN) is the grateful recipient of an electrical test bench valued at $30,000 that has been donated by Brucejack Mine, operating under Newmont Canada. Designed to provide hands-on opportunities to troubleshoot electrical systems, program PLCs (programmable logic controllers – industrial computers used to control and monitor industrial equipment), and practise electrical control work in a controlled and safe environment, the bench will allow students to gain the practical, hands-on skills needed in the electrical trade.
Jarrett Burns, Superintendent Asset Management – Electrical/Instrumentation for Newmont Canada says the organization believes that supporting hands-on training for upcoming electricians helps ensure that the next generation of tradespeople has the practical experience and confidence they need to succeed in the field.
CMTN was chosen as the recipient for the donation because the college has a solid reputation for producing local, skilled graduates who go on to work in industrial and mining environments. “Partnering with the program felt like a natural fit, given our shared focus on safety, quality, and technical excellence, and supporting local skill development in the area Newmont operates,” says Burns.
The company’s goal is to provide students an opportunity to work with real-world systems similar to what they will encounter in industry. This equipment will help bridge the gap between classroom learning and practical application, setting students up for success as they move into their careers.
