Coast Mountain College campuses are closed September 30 in honour of day to recognize Truth and Reconciliation in Canada.
September 30, 2021 is a federal stat holiday to recognize Truth and Reconciliation in Canada. In honouring the spirit and importance of this day, Coast Mountain College will also treat the day as a stat holiday, classes will be cancelled and all campuses will be closed for the day on September 30, 2021.
This newly recognized day reflects the Truth and Reconciliation’s Commission’s Call to Action #80:
We call upon the federal government, in collaboration with Aboriginal peoples, to establish, as a statutory holiday, a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to honour Survivors, their families, and communities, and ensure that public commemoration of the history and legacy of residential schools remains a vital component of the reconciliation process.
We encourage the Coast Mountain College community take this day to reflect on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action. The Calls to Action provide a path forward in decolonizing the post-secondary sector, and also provide each of us with the opportunity to reflect on our shared history and consider our own roles and understanding as we move forward towards reconciliation.
As our campuses will be closed on Sept. 30, we encourage all students, staff and faculty to wear orange shirts on Sept. 29.
